• One in five (≈ 20%) adolescents report experiencing a persistent mental-health challenge.
• The incidence of major depressive episodes among U.S. adolescents increased by over 60% in the last decade.
• The suicide rate among youth aged 10-24 increased significantly over the past 15 years.
• Children experiencing anxiety or depression are at higher risk of academic disengagement, extended absences, lower test scores and dropping out.
• The ripple effect: troubled mental health weakens peer relationships, undermines self-esteem, increases family tension, and heightens the risk of substance use or self-harm.
When a child learns to pause—when they learn to notice their breath, feel the ground beneath their feet, listen to the rhythm of their hearts—they reclaim choice. They move from reaction to response. They reconnect to a quieter inner strength where learning becomes possible, relationships become repairable, and hope becomes visible again.
Project Pause offers evidence-informed, heart-centered programming that:
1. Teaches simple breathing techniques (e.g., 4-4-6 coherent breathing, box breathing) to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and calm the nervous system.
2. Introduces meditation and mindfulness practices that anchor children in the present moment, reduce rumination and build emotional awareness.
3. Encourages movement, dance and singing — joyful, expressive, community-based activities that release endorphins, shift energy, cultivate connection and expand the capacity for fun.
4. Integrates journaling and gratitude practices — enabling children to name their feelings, track progress, nurture optimism and strengthen the habit of reflection.
5. Builds peer-community circles where children share, listen, laugh, pause and support one another — because healing and growth happen best when they feel seen, heard and connected.
